Developing Color Film with Cinestill C-41 Kit
Many photographers think color film developing is complex, but with the Cinestill C-41 two-bath kit, the process is much simpler than traditional multi-bath chemistry. You can achieve beautiful results at home with only a few essential tools and careful handling. This guide will walk you through the process step by step.

What You’ll Need
- Cinestill C-41 two-bath kit (Developer & Blix, plus Stabilizer)
- Film developing tank (e.g., Paterson tank)
- Measuring cylinders and bottles (preferably amber bottles for storage)
- Thermometer (accurate around 38°C / 100°F)
- Timer or stopwatch
- Protective gloves
- Scissors
- Dark changing bag (unless you have access to a darkroom)
- Drying clips
- Optional: AGO Film Processor – keeps chemistry at the correct temperature and ensures consistent agitation.
Preparing the Chemistry
The Cinestill C-41 kit includes 3 chemical groups: Developer (Parts A, B, C), Blix (Parts A + B), and Stabilizer. Here’s how to prepare them:
1. Preparing the Developer
- Heat 800 ml distilled water to ~38°C (100°F).
- Add Developer Part A, stir, then Part B, stir, then Part C.
- Top up with water to 1 L. Mix thoroughly, avoid foam.
- Store in a full amber bottle to minimize oxidation.
2. Preparing the Blix
- Heat 800 ml distilled water to ~38°C.
- Add Blix Part A, stir until dissolved, then Part B.
- Top up to 1 L and stir well (takes longer to dissolve).
- Store in a separate amber bottle.
3. Preparing the Stabilizer
- Mix Stabilizer concentrate with ~900 ml distilled water (room temp).
- Top up to 1 L and stir gently.
- Store in a clean bottle.
4. Storage & Handling Tips
- Always use distilled water for best results.
- Label bottles clearly.
- Keep tightly sealed in cool, dark storage.
- For longer shelf life, squeeze air out before sealing bottles.
Loading the Film
- In complete darkness, open the film canister and cut the leader.
- Load onto the reel and place inside the tank.
- Seal the tank before turning on the lights.
Step-by-Step Developing
- Developer: At 38°C, agitate 10 sec initially, then 4 inversions every 30 sec. Time: ~3:30 min. Drain completely.
- Blix (Bleach+Fix): Agitate 10 sec initially, then 4 inversions every 30 sec. Time: ~6:30 min. Drain fully.
- Wash: Rinse with clean water for 3 min.
- Stabilizer: At room temp, invert gently for 1 min. Do not rinse afterward.
Drying the Film
- Remove film carefully from the reel.
- Hang in a dust-free space with clips.
- Allow to dry fully before cutting or scanning.
Tips for Best Results
- Maintain 38°C / 100°F consistently.
- AGO Film Processor is excellent for stable temperature + agitation.
- Store chemicals properly for longer life.
- Wear gloves for safety.
